Quick+Easy Tips on Caring for Your Natural Hair at the Beach

“That heat rolls in and I simply can’t be bothered with spending time on my hair.” So I am super lazy to care my hair in the summer.

Here is some easiest ways to care hair.

Pre-Swim

– Apply coconut oil, preferably the night before, to strengthen the hair shaft and provide extra protection against chlorine

– Don’t fully wash your hair before heading to the beach/pool, you already have a build up of sweat and natural oils that create a barrier, making it more difficult for harsh waters to penetrate the hair shaft.

– Style your hair in a way that is can easily move from wet hair to styled hair post swim

– If you’re planning an extended sunny getaway consider having braids or twist extensions put in.

While Catching Some Rays

– Mix glycerin with aloe vera juice to make a DIY pre-ocean spray to spritz on your locks

– Apply a generous amount of leave-in-conditioner with SPF.

– Protect your curls from the sunny rays by wearing hats or scarves outside the water.

While Taking a Dip

– Saturate your hair at least 5 minutes before taking a dip. Wet hair will soak up less chlorine or sea salt than dry hair.

– If you have longer hair, tie it up in a big braid or bun to keep it from getting matted and tangled.

– Wear a swim cap! They may seem unstylish but I believe they can be quite chic if done right. It should be noted though, a swim cap will not keep your hair 100% dry, but it does work as an extra layer of protection.

Post-Swim

– Rinsing hair right afterwards is the most underestimated, yet important step in after-swim hair care. It gets rid of a lot of the chlorine or salt before it binds to your hair.

– Co-wash your hair that night or following day to add moisture back. If you’re hair is prone to dryness then do a deep condition treatment.
